Cyber Phishing

Cyber Phishing

What is Cyber Phishing?

  • Phishing is a type of cyber attack using your email, SMS or Instant Message

  • Criminals use tricks to make their victims believe a message is something they need or want

  • Could be an invoice sent to your customers using your email address, company logo etc

  • This could be as a link, download or attachment

  • Can impersonate the company, clone your website or email

  • The goal is usually financial gain by way of deception

  • Covid -19 has seen a rise in new scams and cyber attacks

How often does Phishing happen to businesses?

The Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2020 revealed:

  • British Businesses experiencing a phishing attack has risen from 72% to 86% since 2017.

  • Almost half of Businesses (46%) and a quarter of charities (26%) report to having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months

Examples of the different types of Phishing

  • Pharming – redirects users from a website to a replica spam site where they can ask for details, this is an advanced form of phishing and so it can be more difficult to know it’s not true.

  • Whaling Attacks – Usually attacking the higher paid company staff, sophisticated language and images are used in the email to scam directors/CEO’s etc.

  • Deceptive Phishing – Impersonating a true organisation or person to get someone to click a link or enter payment details, posing as PayPal and Amazon for example.

How do you prevent these attacks?

  • If you are unsure of an email asking you to click a link or if something doesn’t look correct, forward this to the business who its claiming to be, to check its legitimate before you do anything that could harm your business.

  • Train your staff on an overview of Email Phishing and what to look out for and what to do when someone suspects.

  • Have up to date phishing software, this will help defend against malicious scams.

  • Taking out Cyber Insurance has many different types of ways to protect your business including financing the recovery following an attack
